Barry Madikkin (muh-dick-in) High School (2004-2008)
Washington Apex Onyx was born on May 12, 1990, in Birmingham, Alabama.Apex was a multi-sport star in high school. He earned the nickname “Black Betty” because so many of the men in town would say of Onyx “I bet he could do this, I bet he could that.” The name stuck, but so did the issues of being used in so many wagers. As a 6’4” freshman, Onyx led the Barry Madikkin Cougars to 30-4 record a State Semifinal appearance, as a sophomore the Cougars would go 34-2 again reaching the state semifinals. While leading the basketball team he also excelled in football both as a tight end, and defensive end. In his four years at Barry Madikin High, the football team never won more than 6 games, while Onyx received all state honors in his last 3 seasons. As a junior and senior Onyx did not play basketball and instead played baseball. In his 2 seasons as a baseball player, Onyx went 32-1 with a 1.12 ERA wile batting .398 with 46 home runs. Each year, the Barry Madikin Cougars would be eliminated in the state tournament by their rivals from Frank Lee Gaye High School also in Birmingham. Onyx was nationally recruited early on, but made it clear that he wanted to stay close to home, so the suitors became local. By the beginning of his senior year, Onyx had it narrowed down to 3 very excited colleges; Alabama, Auburn, and LSU. All 3 schools would allow him to play both football and baseball. On the eve of signing day the NCAA announced that they would be launching an investigation into Apex’s involvement with Eaton McLitoris, a Birmingham businessman. Upon that announcement all 3 schools withdrew interest and only then did the University of Alabama at Birmingham came into the picture and said they would allow him to come to school on scholarship and see how the investigation went.
University Alabama Birmingham (2008)
While at UAB, Onyx was not allowed to formally practice or play until the NCAA investigation was over. With no scholarship, the head football coach, Holden D. Dix took Onyx into his home with his wife Sharon Dix and daughter Anita Dix. Within 3 months Anita was pregnant and Onyx had to admit that he had been sleeping with the coaches’ daughter. He was immediately removed from the home and expelled from school.
As it turned out, the baby was not Onyx’s. Anita Dix was true to her name and was giving it up to a few other athletes on campus. The damage had been done, and it appeared Onyx’s college career was cut short before it even began. With the NCAA investigation looming, no schools had any interest. Onyx signed with local agent Hymon Burston
The NCAA found out about all of the side bets and athletic contests that Apex was involved in, they declared him ineligible to play sports. No college was looking at Apex for his brains, so with the inability to play sports, college was out. Before becoming a wrestler, Onyx participated in kickboxing. Upon deciding to become a wrestler, he resigned from his job as a store manager of Krystal Burger in Birmingham, AL and traveled Louisville, Kentucky to audition at the VCW Guild, the professional wrestling school operated by Virtual Championship Wrestling.
Virtual Championship Wrestling (2013–2014)
Upon being accepted by The Guild, Onyx completed his training, debuting on an episode of Thursday Night Brawl on 8/3/13; collecting a pinfall win against Punk.
Onyx spent the latter half of 2013 doing battle with the light heavyweights in VCW like Cyber X, Zack Zero, and Johnny Blaze. In January 2014 at Wrestlefest 11, Onyx was paired with KipFlashin a tag match against Teddy Geisel and Bye Bye Billy. On Day 3 of Wrestlefest Onyx and Geisel were voted to compete for the UCW PPV Title. Onyx won the ladder match and the Wrestlefest 12 PPV title.
After Wrestlefest 12, Teddy Geisel and Washington Onyx formed a tag team called Quintessential Perfection, qp. qp won the VCW Tag team titles against the Russians and spent the spring defending them. They would lose the belts to Shinobi Cat and Willis Hayte. They would regain the titles at the end of the summer and defend them successfully until the VCW closed in the winter of 2014.
Krystal Burger (2015-2018)
In the winter of 2014, Virtual Championship Wrestling was purchased by the Wireless Wrestling World (WWW), with a number of wrestlers, including Onyx, being signed to developmental contracts. Onyx was never booked by WWW, despite being paid for one full year. Upon the expiration of that contract Onyx went back to Birmingham and again joined the Krystal Burger team. Onyx was hired to be the local health and welfare administrator. Onyx developed and instituted several initiatives to help employees live a healthier lifestyle.
Action Wrestling 2018
In early 2018, Teddy Geisel contacted Onyx, about getting back in wrestling shape and getting qp back together. Onyx agreed, and began training for a winter debut in AW.
