I’m pacing in my living room. No TV, no radio, just me alone with my thoughts. I do not know what my immediate future holds. I’m not even certain it was Veronica that the Predator and I buried in the woods, but the odds are quite high that it was.
Lord knows what Predator had done to that poor girl, and the Lord only knows the punishment that will soon fall upon my head. The punishment for the actions of another, even though it was my body, it was still another person entirely. A different thought process, a different attitude, and a different set of beliefs.
A knock on the door snaps me out of me back to reality. I nervously open the door to see Detective Mendez. As I open the door, he shoves me back into the living room and quickly shuts the door behind him. This catches me by surprise and I don’t know how to act. Before I know it he shoves me again, this time I trip over the transition from the hall to the living room and call on my butt. I look up at Mendez, still stunned.
“I don’t think you are taking the Baphomet seriously, Mr. Edwards.” Mendez says sternly, “Did you believe that you were safe enough to reach out to law enforcement when law enforcement has been infiltrated for decades by our order. You truly don’t quite get it, do you?”
But… how…
There's a reason I got this assignment, a reason I did the talking, and a reason I gave you my card. We were watching you before the Predator ever even knew it. You were vetted and selected for a reason, do not make us regret that decision. For if you do, the next door I knock on will be your little sisters.
I slowly stand up and take a step back as I do.
What’s stopping me from reporting you?
Mendez smiled at me, and then he laughed. He laughed right in my bloody face. Then he puts his hands on his hips, making sure to pull his jacket back to show me his badge and his gun.
Do you really think I’m the only one in the department that Baphomet has recruited? Do you think it just stops with the department? No dear Skylar, the Left Hand as its fingers extended well beyond the sport of professional wrestling, and well beyond my department. Judges on the state and federal level, politicians from Mayors all the way to senators. So, to answer your question there isn’t a damn thing to stop you from reporting me. But how hard will that blowback on you? More importantly how hard will it blowback on your family?
I’m stunned. My head drops physically, and my heart drops metaphorically.
You have two choices Sky, you can either sit and be a good boy, or you can roll over and play dead. Either way, you are now Baphomet’s pet. If you need obedience lessons, I’ll gladly smack your nose with a paper. BUT, if you’re willing to open your eyes and realize that you are in over your head and that you are no longer in control then everything will be just fine.
I want to attack him. I want to destroy him with my bare hands, but I think of my sister, my mother, and my father. What has he gotten me into?
Chase, my father served in the great war, even stormed Normandy on D-Day. He was one of the lucky ones who survived that day. He was lucky enough to make it out of the war alive. He never spoke about the war, but sometimes we would find him just staring off into the distance at nothing. I’ve seen that same faraway look in your eyes, Chase. A man who has seen the worst in other humans, a man who has seen hell on Earth. It makes you stand out from the other people who’ve never seen such things.
I have never served, but I have seen hell. I’ve seen it inside of me, and I’ve seen the devil himself, he goes by the name The Predator. What I house inside of me, sets me apart from others just like your past does for you. We stand apart from the others here in Alpha. We are different, and we damn sure aren’t normal. So, our match could not be a normal one either. We are going to bring out that hell we have seen and unleash it on one another at Metal.
The thing that will set us apart and give me the edge though, is that while you have lived through hell and made it out to the other side. I live with hell and the devil inside of me. I fight it every single minute of single day. If I can fight that daily and beat it daily, what makes you think I can’t beat you just the same Chase?
What challenges does a mere man represent to a crusader who continuously slays demons? What chance do you have? The answer is no chance, no chance in hell. You’re a very tough competitor and I’m sure your future in Alpha Pro and the sport as a whole is very bright, but right now my light shines brighter and my torch burns hotter.
To say I’ve got a lot going on at Metal, would be an understatement, so don’t be upset with me if I shine my bright light in your eyes and make as quick of work as you as possible. I’m not going to break or bend the rules, but I am going to skip the “feeling out process” and come straight in guns a-blazing. Nothing personal Chase, you are a great competitor, but I’ve simply got bigger fish to fry and my legacy to cement at Metal.
February eighth will be a day that lives in infamy, the day I take my spot at the top.
