"I'm a wee bit nervous," I say as I clip the microphone onto my tie.
"It's nothing to be nervous about, just think of it as having a casual conversation", the producer assured me as he adjusted the camera and made sure I was on my mark.
My first sit down interview on international television, yeah it was something to be nervous about. The hot canned lights along with my nerves had me sweating bullets, and dampening my button-up shirt. I try to clear my throat when a production assistant hands me a small bottle of water. My hand shakes a bit as I take a sip.
Sky, you’ll be fine. Just take a deep breath and I’ll count you down.
I watch as he counts down to five, then goes silent and uses his hand, and after one points at me. I’m frozen, I try to say something, to say anything but no words can escape my mouth. The silence is deafening and moves to awkward. I see the producer with his hands on his hips shaking his head. Then out of the corner of my eye, I spot the lovely young production assistant who brought me the water. She is encouraging me, using her hands as if to say, “come on you've got this”. I smile, and she smiles. I keep that smile and turn it to the camera.
Hello everyone, my name is Skylar Edwards, but you can all call me Sky. I’m the new chap on the block here in APW, but I suppose you could say I’m the new chap on the international scene as well. I've been cutting my teeth for the past few years on the independent scene both here in the states and back across the pond. Sprinkle in a few trips to Japan, and little holiday spent fighting through Mexico and I've become a pretty well-rounded bloke, and a bit of what some call an internet sensation.
While I have worked very hard to get here, I will say that I feel I am truly blessed to receive an opportunity to compete here in Alpha Pro Wrestling. This holiday special will be the biggest event of my career, and the biggest audience I’ll ever be exposed to. Obviously, I don’t know who else is going to be competing in this Holiday Horror scramble match as it is open to anyone.
I may not know who else will be competing in this match, but that doesn’t matter because I cannot control who is in the match or what they do, I can only control what Sky Edwards does. And I’ll let the secret out right now of what Sky Edwards is going to do. I’m going to use every bit of knowledge, speed, and strength I have coupled with my never say die attitude and I am going to win this match. It doesn’t matter if it is myself and one other person, or if it is me and ten other competitors, I will come out on top.
For me, the sky is the limit, and I will soar high in the sky above the rest of the competition and leave my mark on Alpha and all of its great fans. My father taught me at an early age that you only get one chance to make a first impression, and this is my one chance at a first impression in Alpha, and with this chance, I will leave the crowd speechless and awestruck.
I snap back to my headspace; it was like a stream of consciousness had spewed from my mouth without even thinking. Oh Lord, please, I can’t be losing control, not now. As my mouth shuts, I feel my nervousness creeping back over me. I look for the pretty young production assistant again, something about her face and smile gives me confidence and takes the edge off of my nerves.
I find her quickly with my eyes, never having moved my head out of frame. I see that she has moved behind the producer, and is once again smiling. The producer is in my line of sight; thus, he easily catches my eye, and I see him mouthing the word, “more”.
She smiles, and I smile, and the flowing stream of consciousness spews from my mouth once more.
Perhaps the “Dark Horse” Arthan Ardelean will enter the fray, this man seems like a bloodthirsty man on a mission, and I can respect being on a mission because I too am on a mission. A mission to achieve greatness and reach the top of the Alpha mountain. I know it won’t be easy, and I don’t expect to come in and be placed at the top, but winning this open challenge will be a nice feather in the cap and a good starting point.
I know I will have to earn it, and I know men like Arthan, or maybe even the “Sensi” John Fujiwara will appear as a challenge in this open contest. Speaking of the Sensi, I am usually a trusting individual, but I think he might be, pardon my French here, but a wee bit full of shite when it comes to his background. Seems a bit over-exaggerated if you will, but he is still a large man whom appears to be well versed in many forms of martial arts. If he is in the open, or when I do eventually come up against him, he will be strong competition.
There are so many people who could be entering into this match, it is impossible to game plan for your opponents, so like I said earlier I can only focus on myself and what I am doing. There was a group of other talents signed around the same time as me, that means any of them could appear in the open, as could anyone whose been here for a while, and honestly there could even be people from outside of Alpha come in for this special contest.
When you dangle a carrot out there, people will come for it. They have not announced what that special prize is, perhaps it could be a grand award, like a leg lamp.
This little Christmas joke garners some small laughs from the production crew. I only care about one of those crew members though, and her little laugh and increased smile fuel me further. My smile becomes flat, and my tone becomes more serious.
The prize didn’t matter when I put my name in for this match, and while whatever it is will be a nice bonus, a cherry on top if you will, I’m doing this to prove myself to not just the Alpha staff and locker room, but to those who matter the most in Alpha, the great fans who tune in to watch us do what we do. Without the fans, none of us would get to live out our dreams and have the life that we do. I have the greatest career in the world, and I, along with everyone else who calls this sport their profession has the fans to thank for that.
You all make sure you tune into this Holiday special, and I will make sure your time and attention are not wasted. I am going to let it all hang out and I am going to give every last drop of myself to win this match and make you fans happy. This won’t be just my first impression to Alpha and its fans, this will be an everlasting impression on you all. You all can recognize talent when you see it, and when you see me, you will say that the sky is the limit for Sky Edwards.
I plan on going places, and I want to take you all along for that ride with me. Without the fans this whole thing comes crumbling down, so I take this time right here and right now to thank all of you fans, and let you know that I am going to give you all the gift of excitement and the performance of a lifetime.
I lean forward, my elbows placed on my knees, I look deep into the camera, doing my best to connect with all those watching at home to convey my true sincerity.
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting this sport, for supporting Alpha Pro Wrestling, and for supporting me. And I promise you from the bottom of my heart, you are going to get the absolute best of Sky Edwards at the Holiday Spectacular, that goes not only for the fans but for all my opponents too.
I start to smile when I am hit with a splitting headache. I wince in pain and grab at my temples. I slowly stand to my feet. “Cut” the producer shouts.
Ahh, my head, I can barely stand as the lovely young production assistant comes to my side.
Bathroom, please.
