Lucha Bowl Showdown Night #1: Terry Olsen Review
What's up wrestling world? It's your boy, Terry Olson. Tonight was the big Lucha Bowl Showdown from APW. It presented by Netflix and hosted by Eli Beazley. Now if you read my columns before you know that I am not a huge Eli Beazley mark. The character just does not connect with me. But I have to give credit where credit is due. This was a really fun show and it's going to be a fun week leading up to the finale of the Lucha Bowl Showdown.
Rumors have been swirling all week about who might be under these masks. Now personally I think a few of them are fairly obvious but others have me 100% perplexed. It has been a closely guarded secret within APW. I have several sources inside and none of them seem to know just who is playing who. I've heard of rumors of returning stars and stars from other feds who never made it to APW. I heard a crazy rumor that Eli Beasley was playing every single character and wrestling his own holograms. You know I wouldn't put it past him. I was relieved to actually see the luchadores because it's pretty clear that Beazley was not playing all of them. Regardless we have a fun show to review tonight and an exciting week ahead of us. Let’s jump right into it.
Lucha Bowl
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii
Crowd Size: 5-6 Thousand
Opening Segment:
After a pretty sweet video package Eli Beazley makes his way to week to welcome us to the tournament. He thanks all of the fans in attendance and all of the ones watching at home. He only made one reference to the ‘Breeziacs’ so it was actually tolerable. He reiterated that it is a single elimination tournament and that the 4 winners will be in action next week. He said that he is in negotiations with APW for the final match to take place on the return episode of Metal. But that nothing was decided.
Eli also explained that there will be a huge battle royale next week. He said the battle royale will be for anyone that loses tonight, but he also mentioned that it is also open for new competitors. I’m excited for this and I hope that some it draws some interest from the other luchadorsn
Eli heads to the back with the crowd chanting A-P-W! A-P-W! This was a strong open to the show.
Match #1: Ojo Loco vs Coyote de Muerte
Ojo Loco is the largest luchador I have ever seen. If you thought Luchas were supposed to be small and do all that flippy shit then clearly you haven’t seen Ojo Loco. He has to be over seven feet tall and I can’t even begin to guess how much he weighs. There are a few wrestlers on the roster with a very similar build and I think we could probably figure out his exact size by checking the roster on APW.com. Coyote de Muerte on the other hand is the more typical Lucha size. 5’9 and 180 seems about right.
Surprisingly Coyote started off the match as the aggressor. He charged at Ojo with a head of steam. Body kicks and punches followed. Everything he tried felt pretty futile as the big man didn’t even flinch. Coyote attempted a springboard crossbody off the ropes and that is when things went bad and quickly. Ojo Loco caught him. He tossed him on his shoulder and then absolutely annihilated him with a running powerslam. Ojo Loco hooked the leg and got the very easy victory.
Winner: Ojo Loco
Rating: No Rating (Squash)
The cheer as Ojo Loco celebrates in the middle of the ring. Those cheers turn to boos as ‘Godzilla’ by Blue Oyster Cult starts playing. An equally giant man emerges from the back with a lucha mask on. This is Bloodline member Soul Rever. At least we suspect that it is. That is based on the music, his appearance and his manager Johnny Class. Johnny has a mic and said that his client would like to enter the tournament. He accuses Ojo Loco of being to much of a coward to put his spot on the line against “Reaver de Souls”. That Spanish translation definitely does not work, but what the heck. The crowd gets fully behind Ojo Locos as he accepts the challenge laid out by Johnny class. And just like that Match 2 is beginning.
Match #2: Ojo Loco vs Reaver de Souls
This was a much better match up. Reaver got the early advantage against Ojo. Big spot early on as Reaver hit Ojo with a big boot that sent him up and over the top rope. Immediately following that Reaver had the ref distracted and Johnny Class kicked Ojo Loco south of the border. This drew a big reaction from the crowd. This allowed Reaver to control the match for the next couple of minutes. Things were not looking good for Ojo when Reaver locked in his signature bear hug. A few carefully placed headbutts helped Ojo escape.
Ojo was able to battle back and had Reaver reeling. At one point Ojo Loco hit a running clothesline that knocked Reaver down. Ojo with a running leg drop and a pin attempt. He only got a 2. Ojo continued to control the match. Reaver’s manager was getting more and more concerned. Ojo had just taken down Reaver with a shoulder block to the side of Reaver’s knee. The ref was checking on Reaver and had his back turned to Ojo. Johnny Class grabbed a chair, slid into the ring and hit Ojo across the back as hard as he could with the chair. The chair connected with a sickening thud, but Ojo calmly turned around unaffected by the chair shot.
Ojo Loco ripped the chair out of Johnny’s hand and was able to decapitate Johnny with it, Johnny fell out of the ring and landed at ringside. Reaver was up and charging at Ojo, but Ojo ducked down, pulling the rope down with him. Reaver went up and over the top rope. Reaver crashed down to ringside and landed right on Johnny Class. We got a pretty sick camera shot that definitely reminded me of the witch in Wizard of Oz that is trapped under the house. All we saw was legs and feet. The ref called for the DQ and Ojo Loco celebrated again.
Winner: Ojo Loco

Hurican Mas Sexy Segment:
Dani Applegate was backstage and standing outside a lockerroom. Music can be heard coming from inside. The song itself is muffled but the bass line can be heard through the door. Dani knocked repeatedly and after getting no response she decided to let herself in. The room was engulfed in strobe lights, streams and tons of dancing people. Hurican Mas Sexy can be seen in the middle of the group dancing with a woman. Dani was finally able to pull him to the side for an interview. He expressed feeling confident heading into the match. He wasn’t worried about Chapula de Guerra at all. Overall it was a pretty solid interview. There were two notable interactions.
Dani: I love a party but is expending this much energy before your match a good idea?
Hurican Mas Sexy: Dani, this is the pre-party. The real party happens after I defeat Chapula de Guerra. Sexy times will commence all night long.
And there was this.
Dani: This is being billed as a battle of old school and new school.
Hurican Mas Sexy: Chalupa de Guerra isn’t old school. He’s just old. He’s hanging onto what lucha was when he was a young man. Lucha is different now. It’s time for the dinosaur to get out of the way and let the natural evolution of lucha happen.
Match #3:
El Gran Diabolico vs El Gran Sol
The battle of the El Grans! Sol and Diabolico, as I will refer to them from here on out, put on a great match. There was a size difference here but this wasn’t David vs Goliath or anything. Diabolico stands at 6’5 or so and has muscles for days. Sol was 6 of 7 inches. Before the match started Diabolico tried to get El Gran Sol to summon the Vampire Women Wrestlers. Sol didn’t show any interest in doing this and that lead to the match starting with Diabolical taking it to Sol. He threw him around the ring like a rag doll for the first minute or two of the match. The fans were behind El Gran Sol early on and cheered when he was able to get a brief stretch of offense in. He was able to reverse a powerslam into an arm drag and then hit Diabolico with a dropkick. Sol hit the ropes and tried for a running bulldog but Diabolico caught him and converted it into a sideslam that shookm the ring.
Diabolico had control for a good stretch. At one point we saw several pin attempts from Diabolico. He hit a stalling suplex and went for the pin. 2. He hit a massive fireman’s carry slam. 2. He hit a sitout powerbomb that nearly earned him the victory. Diabolico had Sol set up for a Russian leg sweep when Sol started to mount a comeback. His athleticism was on display as he leapt up into the head and took down Diabolico with a headscissors. Diabolico then fell victim to a drop toe hold into a running bulldog. Sol with a quick springboard Moonsault. Sol hooked the leg and got a 2 count.
The fans were ectatic when Sol went to the rope rope. Sol went for a shooting star press but Diabolico moved at the last second. Sol hit the mat hard and rolled to ringside. Diabolico followed to the outside and he used the ringside weapons to his advantage. Sol got thrown into the steel steps, the ring post and the guardrail before Diabolico finally rolled him back into the ring.
We got another quick pin from Diabolico. Diabolico looked like he was about to end the match when the lights in the arena went out briefly. They were only our for two or three seconds but this was enough to distract Diabolico who was waiting for a vampire attack. Sol was able to get a rollup and he nearly stole the match. Diabolico went for the torture rack but Sol was able to wiggle free. Pele kick came from Sol. Diabolico was knocked back. Sunset flip followed by a running front dropkick. Diabolico was down and Sol saw his opportunity. He went to the apron and attempted to hit a flying forearm smash on Diabolico. Diabolico caught him and in one motion threw him onto his shoulder and got the Torture Rack applied. Sol fought it for a while but eventually tapped out.
Winner: El Gran Diabolico
Rating: ****
This was a great match with some amazing back and forth. After the match El Gran Diabolic cut a promo calling for the vampires to come out there. It was definitely strange but I was into it. Great work from Diabolico.
Match #4: Hurican Mas Sexy vs Chalupa de Guerra
This was one of the matches that I was most excited for and it definitely did not disappoint. The narrative going into this match was the ‘Old School’ Chapulpa de Guerra vs the ‘New School’ Hurican Mas Sexy. This was something that manifested early on in the match. Chalupa looked to begin things with some chain wrestling, Sexy would break out of the hold and hit a dance move or strike a pose. Chalupa was clearly irritated by this and this led to him losing his composure unleashing a series of punches that Sexy was able to dodge and duck. Sexy caught Chalupa with a step-up enzuguri and then nearly won the match with a running knee strike.
Sexy was in control of things early on and sent Chalupa to the ropes. Chalupa was able to baseball blide under the legs, pop up and hit Sexy with a series of kicks to the body. Chalupa sent Sexy to the corner with some force. Chalupa runs and hits a monkey toss that sent Sexy flipping across the ring. Sexy landed hard and Chalupa wasted no time before stomping on Sexy a few times. Chalupa pulled Sexy to his feet. We saw a couple of arm drags from Chalupa and then he sendt Sexy to the ropes and hit him with a huge Titl-a-Whirl backbreaker. We had a quick pin but Sexy kicked out at 3. Chalupa continued to look impressive for the next minute or so of the match but the tides changed when Sexy reversed a back body drop into a swinging neckbreaker.
Sexy then took charge and we saw him hit a hurricanrana followed by a diving senton bomb from the top rope. Sexy looked to pin but only got a two count. Sexy spent a little too much time playing to the crowd because when he went for a springboard moonsault Chalupa leapt to his feet and caught Sexy. Sexy was hanging upside down and Chalupa dropped him with a shoulder breaker onto the knee. Chalupa took the fight to the ground and tried many different holds including an armbar and a sleeper holder. This slowed down the pace of the match for a minute or two. Chalupa looked to have the match in hand until a whip to the corner went awry. Sexy was running for the corner and in one very smooth motion he lifted his body up and into a headstand on the top turnbuckle pad. This was a pretty sweet moment. Chalup however was pissed he ran at Sexy only to eat a headscissor takedown that send Chalupa shoulder first into the turnbuckle post.
Sexy had control of the match for a while. He leveled Chalupa with a super kick and then followed that into a northern lights suplex. We got a quick pin from Sexy but Chalupa was able to get his shoulder up just before the three count. Sexy pulled Chalupa to the corner and lifted him up into a seated position on the top rope. Sexy climbed up in the front and had a huricanranna from the top on his mind. Chalupa stops it with a few well placed punches. Chalupa flips over Sexy and ends with Sexy in powerbomb position. Chalupa runs forward and SLAMS Sexy to the mat hard with the running powerbomb. Now it is Chalupa’s turn to get a near fall as Sexy just gets his shoulder up before the three count.
Sexy and Chalupa were on the mat for some time recovering and then they made the push to the end and it was absolutely incredible. Chalupa uses the Electric Chair Powerbomb as his finisher and he had Sexy up and ready to hit it, but Sexy rained some punches down on the top of Chalupa’s head. Sexy flipped backwards hitting the reverse hurricanrana. Sexy takes Chalupa down with a modified stunner and then heads up top for a corkscrew shooting star press. 1……………..2………………….3
Winner: Hurican Mas Sexy
Rating: *****
This was a fantastic match. There was a lot of back and forth that kept this match fast paced and the fans on the edge of their seat. Kudos to both of these men. After the match Sexy and Chalupa shake hands and this draws a big round of applause from the crowd.
Main Event: La Princesa de Oro vs Ultimo Extremo
This match was an intense one and went for just under 23 minutes. The early moments of the match featured both competitors trying to get a leg up on their competition. Lots of chain wrestling and holds but the fans were eating it up. LP (La Princesa de Oro)took control for a stretch around the 4 minute mark. She ducked a clothesline fom Ultimo Extremo and spun around and delivered a swift kick to the side of UE’s legs. UE dropped to a knee and LP ran to the ropes behind him. She hit him with a running snapmare. LP moved to the corner and came out of it with a back handspring into a standing moonsault that had the fans pop big. She covered but UE got his shoulder up after 2. LP continued to attack and we saw her hit a big fisherman suplex which she bridged into a pin but she was only able to get a 2 count.
UE reversed an Irish whip attempt and sent LP into the corner hard. She stumbled forward and into a pop up powerbomb from UE but instead of slamming her to the mat UE threw her forward and with a corner powerbomb. Another quick cover for UE that only got him a 2 count. The biggest spot of the match came at this point with Ultimo Extremo heading up top. UE was perched on the top rope and calling for LP to get up. When she does he leaps off the top and his a HUGE Dragonrana. We get another pig pop from the crowd as he hooks LP’s leg. 1……….2…..KICKOUT from LP.
UE is in control as he hits a series of moves that culminated in the two competitors standing on the ring apron. UE pops LP up and had her in position for the death valley driver onto the apron. He went for it but she was able to grab onto the top rope and pull herself back into the ring. UE was on the apron and he got rocked by a dropkick from LP. UE ends up at ringside and the fans start murmuring as LP looks down at him through the ropes. It was a botched suicide dive that took her out of action for over a year and now she was clearly thinking about it again. LP hit the ropes, ran and successful hit the suicide dive. Silence briefly falls on the crowd until she pops up with her arm in the air.
They battle on the outside of the ring and we saw two big spots. The first came when LP climbed onto the guard rail, leapt off and connected with a beautiful tornado DDT. The second big spot came a few minutes later when Ultimo Extremo fought back. He ducked a superkick from LP and was able to send her shoulder first into the turnbuckle post. UE then connected with a big Northern Lights suplex on the floor at ringside.
UE pushed LP back into the ring and went for the cover. 1……...2...KICKOUT again from LP. UE pulled LP and send her to the corner. UE went for the big corner splash but LP hit him with a big forearm to the gut that took the wind out of UE’s sails. Now LP has UE in the corner. She lifts him to a seated position on the top turnbuckle. LP runs forward, springs off the middle rope and nails him with a kick to the side of the head. Was knocked sideways and ended up on the ring apron. LP rolled him over so that he is lying on his stomach with his head hanging off the ring apron.
LP headed to the top rope. She walked a long the top rope until she reached the middle of the ring and then she leapt off, flipped in mid air and hit a leg drop across the shoulders of UE. Ultimo Extremo fell to ringside. LP pulled him back inside for a quick pin. 1………….2……..THENO!! UE was able to kick out much to the chagrin of LP. LP locked in a single leg boston crab and held that until UE was able to pull himself to the bottom rope.
LP and UE both ended up on the rope rope. LP’s finisher is the Spanish Fly and she had UE in the perfect position to it it but he stopped her and ended up hitting a huge top rope powerbomb. Ultimo Extremo had the option to pin but he took a few seconds to shake out the cobwebs. He and LP reached their feet at about the same time. UE ducked a wild kick from LP. He sent her to the ropes and when she comes off he thrusts her up in the air and hits her with a huge stunner as she falls to the mat. He hooked the leg and picked up the win. Ultimo Extremo and La Princesa de Oro have a staredown before LP finally leaves. The crowd is cheering wildly as we get the APW and Netflix logos.
Winner: Ultimo Extremo

Terry’s Thoughts:
Overall this was a great show. The main event was fantastic. Everyone involved, with the exception of Coyote, came off pretty great. We’ve got 4 amazing winners and a battle royale lined up where I expect to see Chalupa de Guerra, El Gran Sol and especially La Princesa de Oro look for some redemption. I am looking forward to what next week has in store for us. I’ll see you then.
