“I am seeing something new in your life. Is it a woman? Hmmm… Yes, it is a new woman. Am I right?”
We open with a hot of Eli Beazley sitting at a table. His arms stretch across the red felt top and his hands are palm side up in the hands of an older woman with scraggly grey hair. A thunderstorm can be heard coming from the CD player in the corner of the room and there are several different posters on the wall related to palm reading and tarot cards. The old woman has her eyes fixated on Eli’s palms. The Jr. Heavyweight Champ peaks under an eyelid at the woman.
“Yeah, I guess you could say that.”
“I see. The relationship is just beginning. *long pause* Interesting…”
“What?”
“She’s not from here. I’m sensing that she came here from the East.”
“What, like Jersey?” Eli interjects as a smile forms on the corner of his lips.
“No, not New Jersey. I keep seeing Japan.”
“Okay, I’m a believer,” Eli says at the smile fades from his lips. He closes his eyes tightly and leans in towards the woman. Several more seconds pass before the woman says anything.
“This woman… She is accomplished. She isn’t like the other women that have come into your life.”
“Yeah, she has been successful.”
“You are intimidated by her success.”
Eli’s eyes snap open. ‘Now I wouldn’t say that! I have a healthy respect for it. But intimidated? Me? Nah! Breezy isn’t intimated by anyone.”
Now it’s the woman’s turn to smile slightly. She lets a few more seconds pass.
“Your intim...I mean healthy respect for her success does have you pondering the future with this woman.”
“Yeah, I mean I have something she wants. I know she is going to give it her all to get it.”
“I’m seeing that you’re often pursued by women.”
Eli laughs. “Sure. And men too. They all want a shot at ‘Breezy’ Eli Beazley.”
Now the woman’s eyebrows raise. Clearly they are talking about two different things but neither seems to know it.
“Eli, I am seeing a bright future for you. But you must let this woman have what she wants.”
“Over Grandpa Beazley’s dead body! She can’t have it.”
“Open your heart and let her in. You two will be happy together. I see that clearly.”
Now it is Eli’s turn to laugh. His laughs and laughs as he pulls his arms away from the old woman.
“Wait, you think Tsukiko and I should date!?! Ha! She literally wants to slam her knee into the side of my head. She doesn’t want to date me. She wants this!”
Eli lifts the Jr. Heavyweight Championship off of his lap.
“I came here for career advice. Not dating advice.”
“Then why did you choose the “Love Life Reading?”
“That is just the one that came with the coupon!”
“You get what you pay for, Mr. Beazley.”
And with that the screen fades to black for a few seconds. When it comes back to life Eli is leaning up against the trunk of his rental car. The car is still parked in front of the woman’s physic reading place which in the middle of the strip mall. Eli smiles as the camera pulls into a closeup.
“That’s 16 bucks I’ll never get back! Oh well, at least it was fun-ish. To be honest I didn’t think it would work. Breezy doesn’t believe in psychics. I guess I was just feeling a little unlucky and was hoping for some insight. You see, Breeziacs, I have a lot of success here in APW. Fun fact, I haven’t lost a singles match, a triple threat match or a Fatal 4-Way. The only two losses on this resume have both come in tag matches. So as I prepare for another tag match this week I can’t help but worry. In all honesty, there isn’t a lot riding on this match. It’s kind of a hodgepodge of wrestlers thrown together with some interesting chemistry. I mean can Eli Beazley the Jr. Heavyweight Champion co-exist with Tsukiko the #1 contender for said championship. This stuff is interesting and the drama writes itself. But besides that, the match doesn’t mean much. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to win. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Breeziacs, I have never been in a match that I didn’t want to win. I guess that is the competitiveness in me. My mom says that I get it from my aunt Marion. She was a competitive beer chugger after all.”
Eli pauses as he thinks longingly of his aunt.
“Being so competitive is a great thing. I owe much of my success to it, but weeks like this it can be a curse. Because if Tsukiko and I lose on Monday night it’s going to hurt. Just like losing to Jaice Wildes and Zmac hurt way back when I was forced to team up with Jason Ryan. It’s going to sting as much as the loss to the Architects did in the tag team tournament. And these matches are so much harder to win because you are counting on someone else to pull their share of the load. I could give it my absolute best and wrestle the best match fo my career only to end up with a loss because Tsukiko couldn’t pull her weight. That is what sucks about tag matches
“But, I don’t think I need to worry this week. I don’t need to worry about you Tsukiko because you have that same competitive streak. You have the same burning desire that I do. Tsukiko that is what makes you the best tag team partner I have had in APW and what makes you the biggest threat to MY Jr. Heavyweight Championship. It’s a double-edged sword. This week though, it is a positive. You bring so much to the ring and I know that you want to win just as much as I do. As long as we can put this belt aside for a night you and I WILL beat Cray and DJF. And Tsukiko that is the key. Will you let the gold blind you? Will you lose focus and maybe let your knee wander into the side of my head? Or will you stay focused on the task at hand? That’s the real wildcard here and as far as I am concerned that is what will determine who wins this match. Because as good as DJF and Cray Mitchell are. As much as they bring to the ring on their own. They are no match for us. They don’t bring your tenacity and killer instincts. They don’t bring my heart, god-given talent, and legions upon legions of Breeziacs!”
“Tsukiko I plan on working together. I plan on being a well oiled machine and picking up a swift and convincing victory. I’m 100 percent committed to being the best teammate I can be. I’ll tag you in when you want to get in, I’ll share some of the glory, and hell I’ll even let you get the pin if you so desire. And Cray and DJF will be along for the ride. They won’t be able to stop the one night only dream-team that is “Breezy” Eli Beazley and Tsukiko!”
Eli appears to be finished, but then he turns and looks to the camera.
“But Tsukiko, I hope you know that when that bell rings and you and I are declared victors you go back to enemy numero uno. My focus will shift to defeating you and retaining my belt. But until then, I’ve got your back...Partner.”
Now he is done. Eli walks around the car, climbs inside and then backs out of the stall. The scene fades with Eli driving away.
