Dr. Thomas Fischer asks the giant known as Soul Reaver. Soul Reaver nods his head slowly. We find ourselves in Doc’s mansion. Reaver is dressed in a dark-colored tracksuit. The doc is in his usual business attire. The doc turns his wheelchair and leans Soul Reaver into the study. Silence falls on the room as Doc uses his eyes to begin typing out his next thought.
“There are not many people who can say they beat Smith Jones. There are even fewer that can say that they manhandled him the way you did. That was the effort I have been waiting to see. You did well, Reaver.”
If you looked closely you might have seen a slight smile form on the giant’s lip but it disappears instantly. Doc’s electronic voice cuts through the air again.
“Against Jones, you did exactly what I knew you could. You were every bit of the monster that I envisioned. Soul Reaver, with effort and focus like that there is no one in APW that can stop you. The question that you must answer is if this will be something we see every week. Can you become the monster that keeps APW up at night? Can you become the single most dominant force this sport has ever seen? Or will this be a blip on the radar? A one-time thing? Will beating Smith Jones be the biggest success you ever have?”
The words hang in the air as if Doc is waiting for Soul Reaver to answer. Instead, the giant stands there silently.
“Soul Reaver, I did not bring you to APW to be a one hit wonder. I brought you here to lay waste to every member of Alpha Pro Wrestling. Now last week you were properly motivated. Everything I said last week applies to this week and the weeks ahead. If you let me down, this all goes away. But this week I am not going to insult your mother. I am not going to talk down to you. I did that to open your eyes. I did that to show you what it takes to be successful in this sport and in life. It worked, Reaver. So this week let’s point that rage in a more practical direction, shall we? Let us focus on your opponents. There is enough about the three of them to fuel your rage. Shall we start with Lex Collins?”
“Paper champion. That is what he is. He is a champion on paper alone. Collins has been North American champion for nearly 60 days. He has held that title for all of this time and has had zero title defenses. While guys like you are busting their asses every week, Lex Collins has been no where to be seen. While you have been in the ring earning your paycheck and proving yourself this asshole has been off doing who knows what. You know guys like this, Reaver. You know the type of guy who hides when things get tough. They are the worst kind of human. People like you and me have been dealt these shitty hands. And People like Lex Collins get more glory than us. They get all the reward with no of the work. All glory… no guts. That’s the kind of guy that Lex Collins is. That’s who APW chooses to reward? That’s the kind of person that APW wants as one of their champions? Typical.”
Silence.
“And his partner, Smith Jones. You beat the ‘mighty’ Smith Jones. That happened. As I mentioned, there are not many people who can make this claim. And yet some think there should be an asterisk next to your win because of the outside interference. Some think that the victory shouldn’t count. Did they not see the fucking match? Did they not see you dismantling Smith Jones from bell to bell? Reaver, you discovered last week what it takes to beat Smith Jones. The mystique of Smitty is gone. Go out this week and do the same thing. Beat him again. Show the world that what happened at Metal wasn’t a fluke. What happened at Metal is that you kicked Smith Jones’ ass. Plain and simple. No asterisk needed.”
More silence. This time the silence lasts longer.
“And then there is ‘The Situation’ Mike Matthews. Soul Reaver, if there is someone in this match that should fill you with rage it is this man. If you need any extra motivation then focus on ‘The Situation.’ People cheer for this guy. A guy who can barely string together a sentence. On his best day, Matthews is just a bumbling idiot. And yet they cheer. But that is not all, Reaver. The Situation is the man who many think will be able to step up to you on Monday night. They see a big, strong man and assume that he will be able to go toe to toe with you. What they fail to mention is that you still have over a foot of height on him, outweigh him by nearly 200 pounds and stronger than he could ever imagine. What they also fail to realize is that you have been provided a world-class staff to take care of your every need. Let alone that you have been working with the best professional wrestler trainers in the business. But this is supposedly the guy that can take on Soul FUCKING Reaver. Bullshit. That’s what it is. But it’s not the only bullshit involved in this match.”
Reaver shifts his stance as he waits for Doc to finish typing.
“What’s bullshit is the partners you have been assigned. Reaver, one of your partners is convinced she is an alien. The other is the king of trash. Jordi Trash and L. Verez are the best partners that APW can drum up? Our brothers in the Bloodline are fighting in the Bahamas this week and you’re stuck with Trashman and APW’s resident alien. Maybe they will surprise us, Reaver, maybe they will surprise us and be somewhat decent partners. Maybe they aren’t losers like so much of this roster. However unlikely, there is a chance that that could be the case. But you can’t count on it. More likely than not the only chance your team has on Monday night is if you show up and dominate. And that IS likely to happen. The only person on the other team worth a damn is Smith Jones, and you already proved that you’re more than capable of dealing with him. The Situation will be lucky if he can find his way to the ring. Lex Collins will continue to hide in Smith’s shadow. I am expecting the same success that you had one week ago. All that is left to do is to get out there and bring the same intensity that you had on Monday night. Find that rage. Focus on the task at hand and leave carnage in the ring just as you did against Smith Jones. Then on Tuesday you and I will celebrate another victory, the Bloodline brothers will return victors and together we will continue our dominance. As it should be.”
