Russian industrial omni-metal band Stvore walks through a cascade of crimson pyro to take the event stage. The assembled fans lose their collective shit as the music begins; on the AlphaTron, a panoramic sweep of the Death Valley National Park highlights the desert’s natural beauty. A double-time video plays, depicting the setup of the event space, part arena, part amphitheater; the arrival of fans by vehicles of every description, an enormous campground filled with campers, motorhomes, and tents of varying sizes. The video package resumes a standard runtime, as it focuses on the superstars themselves: Jason Ryan walks down the steps of his private jet at a small airstrip; John Blade and Latoya Hixx get each other psyched up in their shared trailer; Tsukiko and her manager, relaxing in a craft services tent hours before showtime; Lucy Sixx and Cecilia Ortiz wander among the crowds, signing autographs; Salvatore Marino inspects the dazzling array of food trucks parked in disorderly rows; Buzzsaw Bundy gets in a few last minute arm curls, while his partner dozes with a Camo Ale in hand; Ultimate Destroyer, contained in a reinforced crate, is airlifted in by an Apache helicopter, bristling with armed men; blurred footage of Flop shows him playing solitaire chess, entire nude, in the makeshift backstage area; Alex Scott pushes the camera out of his face as he makes his way past; the Architects -- Damon Warrens and Lex Collins -- engage in a deep strategy session; ZMAC does lines of coke off the breasts of several fans; and lastly, a split-screen video of the two World Title contenders. Frank Venable grins cheerfully as fans surround him, but there’s an underlying hint of weariness from having just competed the night before; Smith Jones is similarly surrounded by fans, but his expression is one of intense focus as he responds to questions and signs autographs for his adoring public.
As the song ends and the video package comes to a close, Irina Ivanova steps from behind the curtain and into the spotlight, followed by the commentary team of Mike Clearwater and Jonah “Remi” St. Remington. All three proceed down the ramp. Clearwater and St. Remington walk up the steps ahead of Irina and hold the ropes open for her. They take their places, flanking her as she stands in the center of the ring, a microphone in hand.
Irina Ivanova: Seven months ago, Alpha Pro Wrestling aired its first live broadcast with a modest roster loaded with promising talent. We were small time. Never expected to succeed. A dilettante billionaire and a Soviet throwback -- that’s what the industry insiders called us. Said we didn’t have what it took. That we couldn’t keep this place afloat past 2019. Yet here we are, a new year, and this company is steadily on the rise. We’re drawing new talent every week, getting courted by newer, bigger venues every month; we’ve even had pitches from major cable networks to carry our brand! And we could not have achieved all this without our loyal fans, without our dedicated athletes! I know, I’m echoing what I said at the Alpha Awards, but bear with me.
You see, we have been successful. We have climbed broadcast ratings at an unprecedented pace. And while that owes much to the viewers and the talent, I would be remiss if I didn’t credit myself -- my booking genius, that keeps everybody tuning in week after week to see what happens next -- but above that, beyond that… it’s the ironclad way in which I rule this company. And lately, some of the talent in the back have started to forget your place. So tonight… tonight, I intend to set things straight with some of you. Those of you making demands for things you haven’t earned. Those of you issuing threats and ultimatums. Those of you trying to coast by on a reputation without doing much to back it up. The ones who think they’re here for a paycheck, not to entertain these legions of Alpha Faithful. I’m putting the entire roster on notice, here and now. If we are to continue to enjoy the fruits of our successes, then everyone must fall into line, or be culled. You have all been warned.
In the meantime, enjoy the show!
The crowd’s reaction to this statement is mixed, half cheers, half rauccous boos. Heedless, Irina passes off the mic to her broadcast team and leaves the ring.
Clearwater: Well, that was certainly a powerful announcement, but let’s focus on the big picture here --
Remi: That World Title Match, bro!
Clearwater: Yes, that too. But there’s an entire show to get through first, plus performances by our special musical guests, STVORE!
The crowd pops in excitement!
Remi: Oh, for sure, my dude! Ultimate Destroyer in a strap match! Flop and this new Jason Ryan guy will settle their differences in a Bodybag Match!
Clearwater: Alex Scott defends his Junior Heavyweight Title against newcomer Cecilia Ortiz in a ladder match -- that could work to anyone’s advantage!
Remi: A tornado tag match featuring two teams brand-new to this company! The Architects! Blade and Hixx! And they’ll be taking on APW originals WarSaw Pact!
Clearwater: Salvatore Marino makes his Alpha Pro debut against perennial fan favorite Tsukiko in a steel cage, and the Honey Badger himself will put his North American Title on the line against a returning Lucy Sixx in a First Blood match!
Remi: Dude! How DO you make a Zombie bleed, anyway?
Clearwater: We’ll find out, Remi! And tonight’s festivities will culminate in a Falls Count Anywhere main event with the APW World Heavyweight Championship up for grabs! Frank Patrick Venable versus former champ Smith Jones!
Remi: It’s gonna be WILD, bro!
