Dani Applegate: Hello everyone. I realize I have been gone a while. In all honesty, the passing of Masuda Jubei took a surprisingly bigger toll on me than I expected. That is partially why I am not the host of ALPHA TALK any longer. However, I'm going to bring back Squared Circle News, with a bit of a lighter schedule. We're starting out hot! Today, I'm interviewing the now former APW World Heavyweight Champion, Smith Jones. As we speak, here comes the man himself.
Smith enters and has a seat across from Dani. He is dressed in a gray suit with a black tie over a white button-down. He stares Dani Applegate directly in the eye from moment one. He has a sneer plastered crookedly across his face. Jones clips the microphone neatly to his lapel, still staring at Dani. He leans back in his chair and makes himself comfortable.
Smith Jones: Enchanté, Miss Applegate. As agreed, we can speak on any subject that comes to mind. I will address anything you choose to ask. Carte blanche. This chair is comfy. Let’s sit awhile. Ask away, Dani.
Dani: You've made your way to the top of the food chain here in Alpha Pro, and you've proven countless times why the top is exactly where you belong. However, you didn't get the APW Title from who you expected. Originally, you were in a heated rivalry against Masuda Jubei. Does it bother you that you were never able to defeat the late former champion?
Smitty: It bothers me a great deal. It does. I was poised to show the wrestling world that I really could defeat Jubei and bring down the Masuda Corporation. I wanted to rip the Alpha World Title out of Masuda Junei’s cold, dead hands. He just kicked it a titch too soon. Masuda Corp was persuasive; powerful. I mean, you know that, right? You went to a few of their parties, eh? No matter. That is all in the past now. May he rest in peace.
Dani: Agreed, Smith. Now, that still didn't stop you from winning the big one. You became our APW World Heavyweight Champion, and had quite a run until just recently. Through your run, you faced some tough opponents. Who, aside from your most recent opponent, Dean Wolf, who we will get to, was the one that stood out most to you?
Jones pauses. He gets a distant look in his eye, like he is here, but also somewhere far, far away at the same time. His jaw is clenched and his lips pursed as he wanders through a junkyard of old emotions.
Smitty: I spent sixty-three days as your Alpha World Champion. In those sixty-three days, I faced many challenging opponents. When Zion Simmons came at me with the confidence of beating out eleven other world class superstars in the World Heavyweight Contendership Tournament and took his shot at my World Championship… Point of Controversy. Pinfall. One, two, three. I retained. But, Zy is not the one that stands out above all others. Not quite. Smith Jones versus Jazzy John McCarty was a true test for me. I had a really hard time coming up with the proper strategy to combat his style. It took me days in the training chamber to nail down my attack. Tough opponent. But, that match isn’t the one either. Smith Jones versus The Provocateur changed the very way I perform inside the ring in subtle ways, perhaps unnoticed by the untrained eye, but worthwhile and beneficial to my career. He made me look at myself and alter my approach. But, the one man that stands out most in my run of success is the man I beat for the Alpha World Title in the first place: Zombie McMorris. Winning the title from ZMAC brought me to a place where I knew that I could do absolutely anything. I felt truly invincible after winning that match and that win fueled me for months! Zombie McMorris almost beat me at Supremacy. It just wasn’t his night.
Dani: A lot of people view ZMAC as almost undefeatable. You did what many saw as the unthinkable. Although it wasn't Masuda you took down, you still pulled off quite a feat, and you ran with it for as long as you could. How does it feel to have such a large target on your back, even after going through such a difficult challenge?
Smitty: I also viewed ZMAC as undefeatable. I was wrong.
He smiles broadly and adjusts his tie. Jones takes a deep breath before he speaks on with a more serious tone.
Smitty: This target was on my back long before I won the APW Championship. I’ve been in many situations where the world did not believe I could overcome a particular obstacle, and yet I persist. I continue to succeed in the face of every doubter who looks at me like I’m a crazy person. Wanna know my secret?
He gets out of his chair and kneels on one knee in front of Dani. He leans in close to her so that she can feel his hot breath on her face. She leans away. He leans in further still. In a hissed whisper...
Smitty: I’m Smith Jones.
Jones gets up and sits again in his chair, leaning back and running his hands through his hair with a light sigh. Shaking his head, he exhales.
Smitty: Many times along the way, people have hated me. People hate me still. I really don’t get it. I work hard. I am a skilled ring veteran with so many accolades that I really do have to go to my trophy hall to remember them all. Still… No matter how much I try to focus on the people who chant my name, I know that even amongst those chanting people are people who hate Smith Jones. Being Alpha World Champion indeed added pressure to my life. It drew many a high profile, legit threat of a challenger to my doorstep. But, my doorstep has always been a popular chill spot for haters. The mat under their feet says ‘welcome’. I’m right here. Come.
Dani: Recent news came up about Dean Wolf's APW departure, soon after becoming champion. This leaves the title vacated, and the complexion of APW completely different than before. This leaves me with two questions. First, do you think you'll become the first two time APW Champion, with it's vacancy, and two, does Wolf's departure change how you feel about him?
Jones leans forward in his chair with a cautious smile. He chuckles a bit and then lets out a guffaw before settling into a tentative titter.
Smitty: I’ll answer your second question first. I am greatly disappointed by his decision to walk out on APW, especially right after he defeated ME to win the top title. Classless. Deplorable. But, I have NO DESIRE to kick up drama here. Zero percent drama. He wants to be gone? Let him be gone. My opinion of him hasn’t changed one bit. I knew that Wolf was really a snake all along. He leaves behind the shattered task of rebuilding the Alpha World Title... AGAIN. I don’t mind. It’s my job. I’ve considered myself The World Champion all along. Now dethroned; uncrowned. Unsatisfied without my title locked safely around my waist. I can hardly sleep at night. Will I be the first-ever two-time Alpha World Champion? Keep your eyes open and aim them constantly at the incredible wrestler in front of you. You’ll see.
Dani: Before you go, I have another two questions for you. What do you think your future in APW will be like, and how long of a wrestling career do you see yourself having?
Smith inhales deeply and holds his breath for a beat. He exhales very slowly with a bit of a smirk.
Smitty: My future in APW will be long and prosperous. I will continue to do things that people still have a hard time believing I can do. I will face foes I’ve never heard of and I will see familiar faces from my past come to destroy what I’ve become since last they knew me. I will have atmospheric highs and I will have soul crushing lows. I will lace up and show up every time they play my music. I will wipe my feet on the apron every time I enter that sacred squared circle. I will collect people’s blood, sweat, and tears in the fibres of my trademark all white ring gear. I will go on like this for as long as I am able. I envision at least another decade. Maybe two if these old knees hold up. I want to wrestle my greatest foes’ children and grandchildren. Rip a whole branch off as many family trees as possible.
Jones stands up and steps over to the camera, l standing over it and looking down.
Smitty: Twenty nineteen has been a banner year for me. I had Match of the Year. I had Feud of the Year. I am World Champion of the Year. And as a true point of controversy, I am indeed Wrestler of the Year. I Main Evented ten shows, including every PPV except HorrorKore. I took on fighter after fighter after shockingly difficult to overcome fighter, and I collected impressive wins while telling amazing stories along the way. Ask yourself why is there only one Smith Jones and then try to picture yourself being me. You really think you wanna be Smith Jones??? Good luck with that. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Fight me.
Smith takes his leave, leaving Dani at her lonesome.
Dani: What an interview that was, ladies and gentlemen! I couldn't have thought of a better way to return to the fold. This won't be the last you see of me either. Far from it! I will see you all very soon.
Smith enters and has a seat across from Dani. He is dressed in a gray suit with a black tie over a white button-down. He stares Dani Applegate directly in the eye from moment one.
